Giving Back

At Alere, we believe that as part of our Corporate Social Responsibilities Programme, we wish to give back in some way at all levels, both locally and nationally.

As part of the ‘People and Organisational Development Programme’, we value our team’s development and have created a unique link to Giving Back within our company package.   Within our current employees package we provide 2 days of paid leave for every employee to invest back into local community programmes.

Employees have taken the opportunity to take part in their personal or local community programmes within areas such as:

•    Voluntary Work
•    Working with children, schools, etc.
•    Sponsorships
•    Environmental Programmes
•    Care Programmes

We are continually looking for opportunities, in conjunction with the local community, to identify ideas and events which our people may wish to contribute in.   Examples of some of the events that we have already contributed to include:

ATL Charity Group Support Children’s Ward

It was brought to the attention of the ATL Charity Group that the local Children’s Ward at Stirling Royal Infirmary were needing funds to help buy presents for the inpatient children at Christmas time. On hearing this news the Charity Group decided to donate £100 in Early Learning Centre vouchers. SRI Representative Play Leader Lynda Allan said ’It is greatly appreciated to receive this donation. The funds will buy presents which will be given to the children. Santa goes round the ward on Christmas delivering the toys to all the children.’

ATL employee Alan Johnson Photographed alongside Play Leader Lynda Allan had said ’I was chatting to my wife Marion a Staff Nurse at SRI about the new charity group formed at ATL, when she mentioned the Play Leaders were currently writing to local companies for donations, she then asked if we would be interested in helping out. I sent an email to the charity group where it was reviewed and I was very pleased to hear that they were going to offer support. I know this voucher will be used to buy many toys for those unfortunate to be spending Christmas in hospital. I have a couple of young children myself and I know how a gift no matter how small will make the whole experience more tolerable.’

Maggie’s Monster Bike & Hike

For each of the last five years and for 2010, Alere has had a team of employees who have supported the Maggie’s event, which includes a 32 mile Mountain Bike ride followed by a 42 mile hike from Fort William to Inverness.

This year’s event takes place on 2nd May and will see 10 of our people taking on the challenge.  So far over the years our teams have raised in excess of £15K for this very worthy cause.

This year we will be having Winter Limpics, Cake Bake Day, Quiz Night and many more activities to support our fundraising efforts.

Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland Fire Walk

In 2009 two of our people took part in a Fire Walk in Dundee, in the process raising over £250 for this great charity.

We are continually looking forward in our Giving Back and would like to invite any local organizations who can use our programme to develop local activities.
